an overview of the GAO review of the Merida Initiative
Mexico is the third largest
trading partner of the US and cross border trade activity is vital to many
parts of the US economy. However,
the media is filled with stories and headlines about crime and violence
throughout the territory of this vital partner. A substantial amount of US assistance to Mexico is
focused on helping to combat these issues. The largest program of this kind, the Merida
Initiative, was recently reviewed by GAO.
In this session we will hear
from a member of the GAO team that was part of that review and learn what was
concluded about this initiative as well as other efforts underway to fight the
sources of crime and violence with one of our most important trading partners.
Our
speaker, Jess Ford, is a Director with the Government Accountability Office
(GAO) International Affairs and Trade Team.
